When it comes to any disaster or emergency, one of the most important things you will need available to you is the ability to communicate and receive emergency communications and instructions from authorities involved in responding to these emergencies.
In some cases, cell towers will be down or jammed from too many calls. You must remember one of the key things about prepping is to realize that when an emergency happens, nothing you are used to will be the same. Television, power and radio may also not be accessible.
The use of alternative means of communication hand held two way radios (Walkie Talkies), which may be your only way to stay in contact with emergency personel and family members will be very important. If you belong to a prepper network, you will no doubt have already made plans to use this form of communication to reach those in your network to gain information needed to carry out survival plans.
If you have alternative power, such as solar and/or wind power, you will no doubt be in great shape if you've been smart enough to equip your home or shelter with a Ham radio system. Your communications will be at the next level of preparedness. The one thing about this form of communication is taht you must be lisenced by the FCC for legal use of a Ham radio. There are different levels of licensing, each with different privilages, but an entry level Technician license is the best starting place and is fairly easy and inexpensive to get.
How To Get Your Ham License What Is Ham Radio
Another option available is Citizen's Band (CB Radio). This is another way to communicate by radio when cell and land lines are down. It has no where near the distance of communication as Ham Radio, but can still be very effective for local communication and is very inexpensive. It also does not require a license to operate a CB radio. It really depends on what how far you want to be able to communicate. If your prepper network or family members will be close, a CB Radio will be sufficient. If you are wanting to contact family and friends and/or your prepper network from a long distance away, you will definitely want a Ham Radio setup at all locations you're trying to contact. You can take a look at some CB Radio units here.
Some of your most important information will come from local radio and emergency channels and weather alerts. When the power is out, one of your best options is a hand crank radio. These radios use a crank to charge a battery that stores the power created by cranking the handle which generates the power though a generator similar to an alternator in a car. Some of these radios can be charged with solar power as well as standard batteries and may also be able to be charged using a USB port. No matter what, a hand crank radio is a must when preparing for any disaster.
